Medibank partnership
Medibank and Swinburne came together in 2017 to develop integrated health services, teaching collaborations and industry engagement activities. Find out more about what the partnerships involves, what they have achieved so far, and what lies ahead.
Medibank offers a range of health cover products that meet the Australian Government’s student visa requirements and help towards hospital and medical costs. Swinburne recommends Medibank’s Comprehensive OSHC for their international students. It not only supports international students’ access to essential healthcare services in Australia, but also includes a range of additional benefits designed to enhance students’ health, wellbeing and experiences in Australia.
Medibank and Swinburne’s partnership goes beyond the health insurance. We are committed to create a supportive and connected student journey and delivering initiatives that promote wellbeing, provide emergency support, develop academic collaborations and research projects, and open real-world industry opportunities for international students.

In times of unexpected hardship, international students enrolled with Swinburne may be able to access the Medibank Critical Incident Fund, which offer emergency financial support for the student and their families. It aims to help Swinburne international students stay supported and secure during challenging times.
Professional placements and internships
International students at Swinburne benefit from real-world work experience through paid placement opportunities with Medibank. These placements support international students in building industry skills, gaining professional experience and exploring future career pathways in Australia.
These experiences not only support students’ career development but also serve as powerful examples of Swinburne’s industry connected approach. Watch Trang’s inspiring story to see how a Medibank placement shaped her student journey and future.
Health and wellbeing research project
Medibank and Swinburne’s partnership is in a deeper commitment to student wellbeing. It extends beyond service delivery into meaningful research and long-term wellbeing solutions.
In 2024, Medibank supported Swinburne research team to start a collaboration on a research project aimed at better understanding the evolving health needs of higher education students. Post Covid-19 pandemic, shifts in lifestyle and wellbeing have increased risks of mental and physical health of students and increased pressure on support services. The joint project seeks to examine the overall health and wellbeing of Swinburne’s higher education students and co-design students centred health and wellbeing services to ensure they are impactful and sustainable.
Medibank scholarship
Medibank support Swinburne international students by providing fund for scholarship programs. Together, we create a thriving, encouraging and supportive environment for students and financially support students to give them the best opportunity to do well in their studies. The scholarship programs reflect our shared goal of empowering future leaders by easing financial pressure and encouraging academic growth.
Health and Wellbeing Support Services
International Students enrolled with Swinburne can access Medibank funded programs year-round, including Health Check and other wellbeing support programs. These programs help international students destigmatise mental health, address loneliness and wellbeing issues, and work through cultural adjustments while studying in Australia.

The partnership has seen Swinburne students participating in Professional Placements and Professional Internships at Medibank. These have provided valuable industry experience to the students and fresh insights and perspective for the business. Some students stayed on in full-time roles.
Swinburne is currently delivering education programs to Medibank employees on leadership, management and customer service.
Both Swinburne and Medibank are focused on the health and wellbeing of students and the wider community. Under the partnership, Swinburne staff, students and alumni have access to benefits and discounts across Medibank’s insurance range, including health, pet and travel insurance.
Medibank is also Swinburne's preferred provider of Overseas Student Health Cover to international students, which provides a range of services to help cover medical and hospital costs, as well as additional benefits including in-person support on our Hawthorn campus.
Swinburne Medibank co-designed and now co-delivers the Managing Workplace Diversity and Inclusion unit as part of the AGSE’s, Master of Human Resource Management course.
